Jarod Crews and Aaron Bernardi: Stained Glass Artists
This week, I’m featuring two stained glass and wood artists that I’ve been following on Instagram for a long time. They are Jarod Crews and Aaron Bernardi of Cellar Door Trades, and their work is just beautiful. Equally lovely is the way they use their descriptions to paint a picture in our minds.
I talk a lot about the importance of getting noticed quickly in these videos, but the second job of your portfolio is crucial too. You need to help your audience connect with your work so they’ll be more likely to take action. This is especially important if you’re describing your work in an online shop. The Cellar Door Trades site is a great example of how this can be done effectively.
In the first piece, Summer Nights in Joshua Tree, the description combines storytelling, details about the materials, and tips for how to display the work. The second one, Daybreak in the Valley, gives us some insight into the artists’ process and their values as well. Finally, the way they describe the Warm Terrain piece for Instagram is perfect because it includes a little story, shares what the artist loves about this piece, and tells the audience how to get it. Nicely done!
I understand that storytelling can be a struggle, so I included some writing exercises in my Portfolio Writing Workbook to make the process easier. You can use it to identify the best words that describe your work and process, which will help your audience resonate with you.
What did you like best about Jarod and Aaron’s site? Drop a comment! I’d love to know!
