Cheryl L. Guerrero: Photographer
My featured artist this week is freelance photographer, Cheryl L. Guerrero. I first encountered her work on the ArtSpan website and was immediately impressed by the connection she seems to have with her subjects. Perhaps even better is the way she uses descriptions to help her audience connect with her photographs.
In her Travel collection from Cuba, she includes short descriptions with her portraits that really draw me in and help me to imagine the lives of the people there. In her Endangered Threads series, she tells a longer story, spread out through the entire body of work. This is a very effective way of keeping the audience engaged and is much more appealing than an entire page of text would be. By adding key information to her City & Culture photos in the Events section, she inspires those of us in the Bay Area to get out and enjoy life again. Although her photos are gorgeous on their own, my experience of her site is greatly enhanced by the language she uses to describe her work.
I often suggest that my fine artist clients include descriptions of their individual pieces, or bodies of work, as a way to connect with their audience. Since this is the purpose of every portfolio, it’s good to ask yourself what questions your audience might have when viewing your site. One of the benefits of using my Portfolio Writing Workbook is that it includes a content checklist to ensure that you’ve considered all these details when sharing your work.
