Grace Ling: Product Designer
Today, I’m featuring Grace Ling, product designer and founder of Design Buddies. We met in the summer of 2020 when we were presenters for the AIGA Portfolio Festival.
Grace’s site has great hierarchy, which makes it easy to navigate, and a fun, personal feel. Her use of graphics and conversational language makes her projects engaging and easy to read. I’m sharing three that stood out for me as good examples for anyone writing a case study.
The first project is Cell-fie, which encourages girls to explore STEM using gamification. Grace shares her inspiration, goals, and what she learned through this project. This gives her audience insight about her process, values, and interests. Most importantly, she describes why she made some of her choices, which is exactly what a future employer wants in a case study. For the outcome, she shares press releases about the game to show its impact.
Next, is the Electronic Arts case study, and she presents this complex project in a way that’s easy to process. Again, she focuses on what she learned and uses storytelling to help us empathize with the users she’s trying to help. Her Results section is a great model of how to share the outcome of your project.
Finally, the Design Buddies example shows how you can share a less traditional project. She talks about her mistakes and how she made better choices as a result, which is really valuable information to a future employer.
