Johan Egerkrans: Illustrator
Today, I’m featuring Illustrator Johan Egerkrans. I discovered Johan’s work on Instagram and immediately fell in love with his style. I want to share his site because it’s a great example of how to use effective storytelling in online shop descriptions. Johan does this by telling us little bits of the stories that inspire his work. It makes the audience curious and can be a really effective technique!
For each of his pieces, Johan provides the essential information the audience needs to make a purchase, like the dimensions and type of paper used. It’s pretty standard to share these practical details, but he also gives a short description of the lore behind each piece. Since most of his illustrations show mythical heroes and monsters, it’s a great way to get us interested in the stories behind these images. He also uses fun, conversational language to give us a sense of his personality.
Although many of his characters come from Norse mythology, he appeals to a global audience by talking about how some of his creatures are portrayed in other cultures. For example, I didn’t realize how many stories there are about undead creatures all over the world! Pulling your audience into the story of your work can make them more likely to buy than just giving the physical dimensions alone.
I realize that good storytelling can be a challenge. If you’re struggling with it, my Portfolio Writing Workbook can help. There are many tips and writing exercises to help you engage your audience and get them more interested in your work.
