Julia Fernandez: Product Designer
This week, I’m featuring Julia Fernandez, a product designer who I first discovered through the AIGA Portfolio Festival.
I’m excited to share Julia’s site because she presents herself in such a creative way. It’s totally engaging and shows her unique personality. One of the biggest problems I see with new clients is that their portfolios look too much like everyone else’s. I’m hoping Julia’s site will inspire you to think about how you can do something original in your portfolio too.
First of all, her site is really personal. I immediately get a clear sense of who she is with her great Home page video, and that continues with the conversational language and fun facts on her About page. I really feel like I’m getting to know her through this site.
Her approach to storytelling is also very creative. Julia uses a lot of visuals to make her story come alive, but she does it in a way that is engaging, not overwhelming. The mix of different media, clear and compelling descriptions, and good visual hierarchy is extremely effective.
As a result, looking through her portfolio feels like a fun and engaging exploration instead of a chore. It’s delightful. And I can tell you that after looking at many similar portfolios in a row, finding one like this is a treat that your audience won’t forget. Try to make it fun!
If you’re struggling to tell your unique story, my Portfolio Writing Workbook can help. I designed it to guide creatives who want to transform their portfolios from generic cookie-cutters to something uniquely theirs. The reflection questions and writing exercises will help you discover how to make your work stand out and get noticed.
What did you like best about Julia’s site? I mean besides that great video…
