On Tuesdays, we watch talks or interviews with artists and designers and discuss how to present our work clearly and with confidence. This week we’ll see animator Joshua Slice discuss his short films about Lucas The Spider.
As you watch this interview, consider these questions: Does the artist/designer speak clearly and with confidence? Does he use gestures and intonation to emphasize his points? Does he smile and look at the camera? Does he use professional vocabulary?
What does Slice do well? He looks at the camera, and he smiles and gestures sometimes. His posture is good, and he speaks clearly. His speed is ok, and he’s easy to understand.
What could he improve? He seems a little shy or inexperienced in this interview. He doesn’t seem confident. He speaks a little too quietly, and he doesn’t seem very excited or passionate when he speaks. He also seems a little unprepared for the questions they ask and uses a lot of filler words. If he used more vocal variety, more gestures, and increased his volume, he would be much more engaging. It would also probably help him to think about what questions an interviewer might ask and practice answering to sound more confident in the future.
What professional vocabulary does he use? First, he talks about how long he’s worked in the industry, and he mentions working for Blue Sky Studios and Disney. Next, he talks about his inspiration for Lucas. He saw an internet meme and wanted to push the idea of whether a spider could be cute. Next, he talks about his challenge and then finishes by describing the process of how he used his friends to give him feedback on his different models for Lucas.
Artists and designers work very hard to get noticed and build an audience. When you get the chance to be interviewed on tv, you want to impress the viewers to become even more popular. A good language coach can help you to share your work with confidence so that even more people will want to see what you do.
At Artglish, we help artists and designers to speak confidently about their work. We coach you to speak professionally using the best vocabulary and correct pronunciation.
