On Wednesdays, we look at artist statements or design philosophy statements and discuss the best vocabulary to describe an artwork or design. Today we’ll look at the About page of German animator Oliver Latta, also known as Extraweg. Here is a video of his animations that I saw recently on Facebook.
Here is the text from his About page, in italics.
I am a motion designer and illustrator, currently based in Berlin, Germany.
My strength and focus lies in motion graphic design, animation and art direction.
I have a deep passion for the aesthetic value. Passion and love drive me to create beautiful imagery and animation in every project I approach, no matter if it is live action, 2D or 3D animation – or everything combined. I’m also extremely interested in the power of visual narrative, communication, and how technology is changing all of it.
I am open to new experiences and always look forward to facing new creative challenges and enjoy working both onsite and remotely and have collaborated with clients around the world.
Please feel free to get in touch, should you be interested in working with me.
Now my comments:
In many ways, this is a good artist statement. Latta talks about his work in a way that is clear and easy to understand and he provides some interesting details, but he still talks about his work very generally. He’s not describing pieces of his work in specific but talking about all of his work, his body of work, in general.
He starts with important information – what he does and where he works. Then he talks about his strengths and his passion. He lists the different types of work he can do and talks about his motivation. He also talks about his goals and his willingness to work remotely. He finishes with an invitation to contact him.
If Latta wanted to improve his About page, he could include a little information about his process, such as the techniques or programs that he uses. He could also talk about his current work and how it has evolved over time. Additionally, he could talk about what challenges he’s faced or what makes his work unique.
Let’s take a look at some of the words and phrases he uses: strength, focus, passion, aesthetic, love, beautiful, open, look forward, enjoy, feel free to get in touch. These are all really positive, motivational words. They evoke our emotions and our desire for growth, beauty, or freedom, and they inspire us. Think about how different his statement would feel without these words. Here’s one sentence as an example.
Passion and love drive me to create beautiful imagery and animation in every project I approach, no matter if it is live action, 2D or 3D animation – or everything combined.
I am driven to create interesting imagery and animation in every project I approach, no matter if it is live action, 2D or 3D animation – or everything combined.
The first sentence is much more exciting, isn’t it? Using the best words to describe your work is a very important part of getting your audience to pay attention to it. A good language coach can help you to talk and write about your work in a way that is both easy to understand and inspirational. Think about it!
At Artglish, we help artists and designers to write a statement or About page that best describes their work. We focus on choosing the best vocabulary and language to help your work shine. I’ve chosen 5 words or phrases for you to focus on today. They are in bold. If you don’t know them, look up the meaning, synonyms, antonyms, and other forms of these words. You can find links to Merriam-Webster dictionary sites at the bottom of this page.
